The healing power of the Carratraca waters that are rich in sulphur, calcium and magnesium were enjoyed way back in the Roman times, when the soldiers used the waters to heal wounds suffered in the big battles. But it was the Arabs who named this town that stands at the foot of the Sierra Blanquilla. The name Carratraca comes from the Arabic word “Karr-al-krak”, which means “scourge cleaning”.

Miracle waters

Legend has it

Legend has it that it was the smuggler Juan “El Camisón” (this literally means “he who wears the  long gown”) who rediscovered the healing power of the waters. His nickname describes him well; his body was raw and full of festering sores, so the only thing he could wear was a fine long linen gown. Juan “El Camisón” reaches this small town fleeing from justice and he hides in the farmyard of a shepherd “El cortijo de las aguas hediondas” (The farm of smelly water); day after day he watches how the shepherd bathes the sheep that have dirty wool and blackened skin in fowl smelling water. “El Camisón” decides to do the same and he finds that after bathing himself a few times, his skin that was formerly swollen and ulcerous recovers its normal colour and smoothness.

Years later

The place were these waters flow, where “El Camisón” cured his wounds, later became the epicentre of the European Bourgeois life, a place where deals worth millions would be closed whilst the Bourgeois bathed in the waters; it was a place to retreat and relax for kings, aristocrats and noblemen.

In 1830 king Fernando VII visited the thermal spas and ordered the construction of the “El Hostal del Príncipe”, which is now Hotel Villapadierna Thermas , as his home to stay in whilst he benefitted from the thermal waters. Twenty five years later, thanks to the Count of Teba, the father of Eugenia de Montijo (wife of Napoleon III) and Maria Francisca XV, the Duchess of Alba donating land in return for the exclusive use of one of its baths, a beautiful neoclassic Spa was built in sandstone and marble. This has been preserved up until today after an exhaustive renovation project and it is connected to the hotel by an underground passage.

The Walk

Since then and up until the present day the Thermae of Carratraca have been visited by distinguished people such as Lord Byron, Teophile de Gauthier, Alejandro Dumas and the writer of children’s stories par excellence, Hans Christian Andersen. Later on Reiner María Rilke, Vicente Aleixandre, Antonio Gala, and artists of the standing of the painter Julio Romero de Torres and more recently the actor Antonio Banderas, the Princess of Norway (fertility treatment) have also come to stay. They have all benefitted from the miraculous Mineral-Medicinal waters of Hotel Villa Padierna Thermas of Carratraca.

Curative Power

Mineral-Medicinal Waters of Villa Padierna Thermas

The thermal waters of Carratraca are classified as being Mineral-Medicinal, containing sulphur, calcium and magnesium; they flow out of the spring at a perfect temperature of 18 ºC, which preserves all their properties.

Sulphurous water is known for having the most powerful anti-free radical and antioxidant properties that exist, which is why all our treatment is very effective when it comes to anti-aging. The International Society of Medical Hydrology states that according to the studies and tests that have been carried out, sulphurous water can be used effectively in medical specialities such as dermatology, rheumatology, pulmonology, otorhinolaryngology and gynaecology. Moreover it is beneficial in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, balneotherapy, aesthetic medicine, fitness, and sport.

Many studies have been carried out on sulphurous waters and therefore a lot is known about their biological effects. The sulphur compounds are absorbed by the body using both internal cranial therapeutic methods (drink, aerosol, irrigation, etc…) and external (mud, bathing, etc…). In any case, the preferred way to eliminate the H2S is through the lungs and there is also a powerful organotropism for the joint structures. This explains why the therapy is recommended for conditions in these areas of the body. The absorption through the skin, the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, vagina and the gastrointestinal system have been proved and are well-documented.

Curative Power

Effect on the autonomic nervous system (it reduces the blood pressure).

Effect on the defense mechanisms (it increases the production of anti-bodies) and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

Antitoxic Effect (on different organic and metal substances such as lead, phosphorous, diphtheria toxin).

Effect on the Liver (it stimulates the activity of the hepatic stellate cells and it has a detoxifying effect on the body).

Effect on the smooth muscle and on the digestive secretions.

Effect on the mucous membranes and mucus (it favours exfoliation, regeneration of the epithelium and it favours expectoration).
